Painkillers are introduced to people when they usually have a pain symptom. There are many people who use narcotic painkillers for a common headache or other simple pain problems in the body.
When they continuously use narcotic painkillers for simple problems, it can even lead to chronic pain. But the actual usage comes when people have severe pain or inexpressible chronic pain.
That is when they should go for narcotic painkillers to get an immediate relief. But they should be very careful in using it as can affect people with various types of health disorders associated with chronic pain.
During the initial stages of chronic pain, the doctors prescribe painkillers to help the patients get a relief from the pain.
In spite of them saying that it can be used only for emergency situations, most of the people use the overdose of narcotic painkillers and end up in severe complications.
A recent study has identified that use of narcotic painkillers can cause chronic pain in a normal person who never had chronic pain symptom before.
There have been cases where people after using narcotic painkillers continuously as an overdose have to gain a long-lasting chronic pain.
These pains that they get are usually difficult to diagnose and end up in conditions like fibromyalgia. There are many side effects already evident and well known from the usage of narcotic painkillers.
But people continue to use it to get an immediate relief. But when the effect of the painkiller goes away from their body, they again seek to get injected with another dosage of painkiller.
This is how the addiction towards painkillers start. Most people report that they are able to do their day to day activities only if they get the right amount of narcotic painkillers consumed.
Mental impact of painkillers
It is not the case that painkillers are usually associated with the body and they provide relief from the pain to the body. But they are also directly or indirectly associated with the mind of a person.
A simple example is that a person who is addicted to using painkillers will find it difficult to get past one day without the help of painkillers.
It can’t be directly said that the person is addicted to painkillers. But due to the pain a personal experience, the mind will usually look for an immediate solution.
It will already be aware that painkillers usually help in relieving the pain. So the person will obviously look for painkillers and will not even bother to look for an alternative solution.
This is one way in which painkillers can have an impact on the mind. Another way is that people will be exposed to too much of mental stress looking for painkillers to suppress the problems.
In many cases, people have also expressed that the painkillers have also affected the normal feeling of the person due to continuous dosage.
After continuous usage of painkillers, the mind will be set asking for more and more dosage of painkillers to handle the pain problems in the body.
The tolerance level in the body will be increased where you will end up taking more dosage to match the need of the mind.
People say that it is just an addiction that comes from the mind more than the body. If the body is allowed to take an alternative method to handle the pain, the mind will still urge to get a relief from painkillers.
People who are addicted to such painkiller medication will usually visit various doctors to get the medication. It becomes very difficult for them to come out of such addiction.
Researches by CU’s department of psychology
In order to understand the behavior of painkillers, various researchers were carried out as part of CU Boulder study. It has been a story for a long time that the painkillers will provide side effects when consumed.
People also reported that they started to experience amplified pain after continuous usage of narcotic painkillers. To understand more about this an experiment was conducted on rats for several months.
The findings from the research were a surprise to the researchers. Some of the key points of their finding are as follows:
- Painkillers can increase the duration of pain in the body.
- When experimented on rats, it was identified that when painkillers like morphine were injected, the pain signals produced by the brains were made to last long and started to give a worse feeling.
- When there was a nerve injury in Rats, the brain signals were produced to keep the rats in the alert mode to withstand the pain.
- When morphine was injected to treat the nerve injury, it led to further complications like spinal cord inflammation and increase in pain level.
It is believed that the same thing is happening in human beings as well. From what we hear from the experienced pain survivors, it is clearly evident that narcotic painkillers can lead to chronic pain in the body.
Even if the painkillers are consumed for a normal problem, it can further lead to complicated chronic pain symptoms.
Sometimes these chronic pain can even last for a longer time and becomes difficult to handle and cure.
Chronic pain should be treated with the help of natural methods. From the experiences of people who already have chronic pain, it is evident that most of them suggest avoiding painkillers for any type of pain in the body.
People will start to use narcotic painkillers to ease some simple pain in the initial stage. When they get used to it, they then go for a heavy dose for treating other pain problems in the body that comes as an outcome of an injury.
When they get used to it, addictions come to place and can lead to chronic pain. Later they will find it very difficult to come out of the addiction even after trying various alternative medication or therapies.
